Nintendo Switch, a Frontier for Handheld Gaming

If you’re thinking about buying a Nintendo Switch, but can’t quite make up your yet, I’m here to help. I have recently picked one up and I can honestly say that I’ve spent 99% of my free time just playing the games. What I really like is that the Switch is a hybrid console. It’s a portable, handheld gaming machine all in one! You can plug it into your TV via a dock and have a full out 1080p console. You can take it with you on long trips and play all the games you can on other consoles. But the most important part: Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the Nintendo Switch exclusive.

The Switcheroo

Before you decide if you want to spend $300 on a handheld console, you should know a few things first. Let’s cover the specifications first:

  • Dimensions: 4 x 9.4 x 0.55 in
  • Weight: About 0.66 lbs
  • 6.2-inch LCD touchscreen with 1280 x 720 resolution
  • Nvidia Custom Tegra Processor CPU and GPU
  • 32GB of internal storage. Extendable with a microSDXC cards
  • 1080p when docked to a TV and 720p in handheld mode
  • Stereo Speakers and a 3.5mm audio jack
  • 4310 mAh Battery (2.5 – 6.5hr battery life)

The Switch comes with a custom stand, so you can take the JoyCons (the controllers attached to either side of the console) and attach them to a sort of an anchor. You can use the touchscreen to scroll and select games, but most in-game activities are handled with the JoyCons.

Popular Nintendo Switch Games

Most of the best games for the Switch are made by Nintendo themselves and are therefore exclusive to the Switch. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was the one I was the most excited about. As a big fan of Legend of Zelda franchise, I just couldn’t wait to get my hands on their newest masterpiece. And I gotta say, I’m not disappointed. The best thing is, the game actually comes with the console when you buy it!

There are also plenty of Mario games that are worth playing.

  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  • Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle

The Switch is becoming a more and more popular platform with other developers also. One of the bigger games available on it is The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. However, the Switch is particularly good for indie games like Hollow Knight and Stardew Valley.

Price vs Value

In the United States, the price of the Switch is $299. In the UK, it’s £280. Some stores in the United States sell the console bundled with games. Yes, the Breath of the Wild comes with the console, but you can also find deals that bundle up several other games with the Switch. However, in the United States, the bundles are sold less frequent, and therefore the stock can be more limited, but you can typically pick up a console bundle for about $360. So it’s totally up to you to decide whether you want to bust out almost $400 for a handheld console and a couple of games.
